Mumbai police plan new squad to fight terror

Mumbai: After forming a Quick Response Team (QRT) and setting up a National Security Guard (NSG) hub in the city, the police now plan to form a Response 10 squad. The squad, police commissioner Arup Patnaik said, will be the first to respond in terror or crisis-like situations.

“The NSG and QRT are there to respond to terror attacks. But the first response should come from the local police station. Response 10 will coordinate with all agencies and reach an affected spot within 10 minutes,” Patnaik told an annual crime briefing.

Currently, all five regions in the city police have a QRT team, each comprising 48 specially trained commandos. After the deadly 26/11 terror at
tack in the city, which killed 166 people and nine terrorists, terror-fighting equipment, arms and ammunition have been provided to the city police. The QRT commandos conduct mock drills every week and they have to reach any spot within seven minutes. But the police chief did not elaborate on the new squad’s requirements.

On the 13/7 triple blasts
probe, Patnaik said, “The case has been transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). But we are very much part of it. It’s a case against the nation and we are trying to get information about the culprits. There is no joint investigation in the case. The entire probe is being taken care of by the ATS.”

Besides this, the police are focusing on tackling fake currency. “Last year, we seized US dollars worth nearly Rs 5 lakh. During investigations it was found that the dollars were being manufactured in Pakistan. Fke Indian currency notes worth Rs 74 lakh were seized in police operations,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime). The police have registered 46 cases of fake currency in 2011.
