Mumbai: Maharashtra home minister R R Patil has ordered a highlevel probe against additional commissioner of police (Mumbai south region) Krishna Prakash after opposition leaders accused the officer of amassing several properties in the state by “misusing his position”.

During question hour in the assembly on Wednesday, the leader of the opposition, Eknath Khadse, and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis alleged that Prakash had provided misleading information about the value of a land he had bought in the temple town of Shirdi. Fadnavis claimed the senior police officer had also bought realty in prime locations in other districts in the state such as Ratangiri and Aurangabad.

“Prakash showed he purchased land (in Shirdi) at Rs 1 lakh per acre. To my knowledge, the actual value of the land is Rs 30 lakh per acre,” Phadnavis said.

Senior officer says he’s ‘ready to face probe’

Mumbai: Demanding a probe into the assets of senior police officer Krishna Prakash, senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said: “The officer should identify land available at such throwaway prices. We too would like to buy property at such a low rate.” He added: “The officer seems to have misused his position to procure the land.”

In his reply, R R Patil said Prakash had mentioned the land he owns in the asset declaration given to the government and “in the IT returns”. However, opposition leaders insisted on their demand.  Finally, Patil gave in and announced a probe, which will be conducted by an officer of the rank of inspector general of police.
“We will verify whether the IPS officer undervaluedhis assets,” Patil said. “The probe will be completed within three months and the report tabled in the state legislative assembly.”

Prakash told TOI, “I am open to any inquiry. My conscience is clear. I have submitted my property details in income tax returns. I have never hidden anything from the state.” He refused to comment when asked if he suspected political conspiracy behind the probe. Sources however saiditcouldbethefalloutof Prakash’s achievements: in 2011, officers under him had arrested a legislator’s kin in a criminal case.

According to a Mantralaya source, Prakash was “handpicked by Patil” to take over as additional commissioner of police (south region) in Mumbai.
