In city, only 1 in 5 rapists goes to jail

Mumbai: The city’s conviction rate for rape stands at an abysmal 22%, reveals an RTI query to track the crime in Mumbai over the last decade. Despite the crime being liable for life imprisonment, it has attracted a maximum of 15 years in a case. But there too, the sentence was overturned by the high court.
    The police say that in more than 75% of the cases, the accused are known to the victim, which proves to be a hurdle. “Victims’ families often do not pursue cases due to stigma, which results in low conviction,” said a senior police officer. P 2
