Mumbai: Contrary to security agencies’ belief that several successes against the Indian Mujahideen have crippled it, the home-grown terror outfit is very much active in Mumbai. Confidential documents available with TOI reveal that IM recruits conducted a reconnaissance of at least 11 possible targets in the city in August. The places (see box) include locations like the Zaveri Bazaar-Kalbadevi-Mangaldas Market-Mumbadevi mandir zone which has been targeted in the past.

The revelations by IM founder Yasin Bhatkal during interrogation are giving security agencies sleepless nights. “The
arrests over the years were a good signal, which we thought crippled the IM’s network. Initially, 22 IM operatives were arrested by Mumbai police in 2008, then over a dozen each were held by Delhi police and Gujarat police the same year. Again in 2011, more than six were arrested by Delhi police. But every arrest reveals details of more shocking plans,” said a source
in the security establishment.
