Mumbai: Assistant sub-inspector, Sanjay Deshmukh, whose negligence led to the escape of Indian Mujahideen operative Afzal Usmani was also under the scanner in June this year. On June 27, Deshmukh had escorted gangster Devendra Jagtap alias JD from a city sessions court to Navi Mumbai’s Taloja jail. Soon after reaching the jail, JD had opened fire on extradited gangster Abu Salem.
While the Colaba and Navi Mumbai police are hunting for Usmani, the Mumbai ATS has also begun a parallel probe into the lapse. “Though there is not a single negative remark on Deshmukh’s service record book till date, it’s true that he was part of the escorting team on June 27 and had escorted JD, minutes before he opened fire on Salem,” said an ATS officer.
Deshmukh was summoned by the ATS on Tuesday. “But we were told that he was not well and was admitted to a hospital,” the source added.
