DRUNKS, ADDICTS INVOLVED IN RACKET
Mumbai: The milk that you drink may have been adulterated by drug addicts and drunks who directly blow air into the packets to maintain the original air pressure, before re-sealing them.
On Friday morning, the Dongri police busted a milk adulteration racket and arrested four people, including
a woman. Police said that Srinivas Gashoti (32), his wife Anita (25), her brother Janye Chitimata (22), and Yadaya Nimanagoti (30) would open branded milk packets, mix water in them, blow air into the packets and re-seal them.
After receiving a tip-off, the police raided a few shanties near Wadi Bunder bridge at 4am, and seized 400 litres of adulterated milk and more than 500 empty packets of branded companies.
Police said that the gang would buy 200-300 litres of branded milk packets. They would either tear open the packets or use an injection to extract 30%-40% of milk. They would mix water into the packets, blow into them to maintain air pressure and then re-seal them. The pilfered milk would then be mixed with water and filled in new packets. “The accused would sell these milk packets in the market or supply them door to door in the nearby buildings. The four had been arrested by the Byculla police last year for a similar offence,” said an officer.
The Dongri police are now trying to find out from wherethe accused had got the empty branded milk packets.
