Police to list black sheep in force

Mateen Hafeez

Mumbai:

The city police will compile a `black list' of policemen who are alcoholic, womanizers or of doubtful integrity. The list will be ready by May-end and such policemen will not be given postings where they could be in touch with the public, said Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria.

“The list will include police personnel who are into alcoholism, drug abuse, womanizing and whose integrity is doubtful,“ said Maria.

Last week, three police men from Sakinaka police station were arrested for raping a model and extorting money from her. The trio has been suspended and a probe is on.Last month, a police constable was arrested for possessing and transporting 112kg of banned narcotics, mephedrone. Also, about the transfer of 36 police personnel from the traffic department to the local arms division, Maria said they either didn't have aptitude for traffic, medical fitness or were transferred due to non-performance. “ About 45 days ago, I conducted a meeting of senior inspectors and above rank officers of the traffic department and asked them to identify such people. They were identified and transferred to the local arms' units. I want to see the traffic police on the road, which I hardly see,“ added Maria.

He said that the special branch and the crime branch have started identifying those drunk on duty and suspected to be involved in drug abuse. The `black list' will be updated every year.

Meanwhile, senior police officials have been asked to exercise their power for more effective policing and supervision. “We have completed training of one batch in behavioral changes. All cops across police stations who perform station house duty and meet public on a day-to-day basis will be part of this training,“ he added. Maria has also ordered policemen not to avoid registering FIR over jurisdiction issues.
