Mumbai: A day after Cricket Club of India (CCI) CEO Kamaljeet Rajpal was admitted to hospital with a gunshot, the police said he had attempted suicide. His family, however, claimed that the gun went off accidentally while it was being cleaned, a senior officer told TOI.
The Cuffe Parade police on Saturday recorded the statements of Rajpal’s wife, Rita, son Survir and daughter Mrinalani. The bullet went through his mouth towards the head, causing damage to the skull. Doctors at Bombay Hospital said he was operated upon on Friday night and his condition (53) was critical. Rajpal was facing a case of sending obscene email to a woman member of the CCI.
“We got an emergency police register report from Bombay Hospital around 8.30 pm on Friday, informing about Rajpal’s injuries. We went to the hospital and he was being operated upon. A team conducted a panchnama at Rajpal’s ninthfloor flat in Venus building, Cuffe Parade, and took his country-made revolver in custody,’’ said inspector Vilas Bhole.
The police said the incident occurred around 6.30 pm, shortly after Rajpal returned from the sessions court. “His wife Rita told in the statement that Rajpal went into his study and soon after they heard a gunshot and screams. She, along with her son Survir and daughter Mrinalini, rushed to the study and found Rajpal in a pool of blood. The three family members said Rajpal was cleaning his licensed revolver when they heard the gunshot,’’ Bhole said.
However, an officer said, “If he was cleaning the revolver, there should have been a piece of cloth lying around. We did not find anything. It seems to be a suicide attempt but we are yet to establish it.”
The police have not registered any case so far. “If it is established that it was an accident, we will not register any case. But if we find that he attempted suicide, then a case will be registered against Rajpal,’’ the officer said. No suicide note has been found.
Rajpal’s 7.65-bore revolver was loaded at the time of the incident. “He had one bullet injury in the head. There were seven more bullets in the revolver. Besides, 17 bullets found in the flat have been seized,’’ said senior inspector Dhanraj Vanjari.
“The surgery went off well,” said neurosurgeon Keki Turel. Rajpal is currently in the intensive care unit and is likely to be kept under observation for the next four days.
