Borude last called from Ahmednagar

Mumbai: The last location of dismissed senior inspector Arun Borude, who is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl, was found to be a remote village in Ahmednagar on November 9 before he switched off his mobile phone. The victim had delivered a baby on October 17 in Rajawadi Hospital.

Ten police officers and 30 constables have been deployed to trace the fugitive Borude. Police sources said they tried to locate Borude through his mobile phone, but it has been switched off since November 9. “The last location in the record was shown to be a village near Ahmednagar,” said an officer. Ahmednagar happens to be Borude’s hometown. “We are making all possible efforts to locate him, but there is no clue as yet about his whereabouts. Moreover, his wife and daughter have also gone into hiding,” said the officer.

Borude, a blue-eyed boy of his hometown, had ambitions to contest MLA elections from Ahmednagar after his retirement. During a search at a flat in Andheri’s MIDC area, the police found the case papers of some sensational cases at Borude’s flat. “The papers are
about the custodial death of bomb blast suspect Khwaja Yunus, several robbery and underworld cases, news clippings of encounters in which Borude took part, etc,” said a police source. The papers, mostly photocopies, have been seized. However, an IPS officer termed the papers “ordinary”. When Yunus was murdered in the Powai lock-up in 2003, Borude was in charge of that crime branch unit.

“We are probing the case and exploring all the angles,” said the officer. Borude, who served 27 years in the police force before being dismissed on November 17, will not be entitled to his provident fund and gratuity, which collectively works out to approximately Rs 14 lakh. On sensitizing the force and prevent Borude-like cases, the officer said, “Action is the best sensitization. You cannot keep issuing circulars and notices asking cops to take precaution from certain things. Effective action by the department, like dismissal, is the best answer to such crimes,” said the officer.
