Mumbai: The Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad (ATS) has almost completed its probe into the Pune German Bakery blast case and is ready to file the charge sheet. The ATS had arrested Mirza Himayat Baig (29), the leader of the banned outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) from Pune on September 7 in connection with thecase.
ATS chief Rakesh Maria on Sunday said that they were busy compiling the charge sheet. “We have collected a lot of evidence, including forensic reports, witness statements, documentary evidence and bank statements of Baig. We have also scanned the financial transactions carried out by Baig in the last three to four years,” said Maria.
An RDX bomb, planted within the premises of the German Bakery in Pune, had killed 17 people and injured 65 others. The bomb, which went off at 6.50 pm on February 13 in the bakery at Koregaon Park, was planted at 4.30 pm. A mobile phone alarm was used as the timer, the police said. Among the 17 dead were four foreigners.
The ATS said the blast was the handiwork of the LeT and carried out with the help of fugitive IM operatives. Baig, who is believed to have united the LeT and IM operatives in the state, owned Global Cyber Cafe in Udgir, Latur. “The explosives were brought to Udgir and the bomb was made at the cyber cafe,” added Maria.
The ATS is now hunting for two key suspects — Mohammed Zarar alias Yaseen Bhatkal, who hails from Karnataka, and Mohsin Chawdhary, a resident of Pune.
