Nashik: Kunal, son of deceased oil mafia kingpin Popat Shinde, on Wednesday told his family that his father and Malegaon additional collector Yeshwant Sonawane had a major argument on January 25. It was after this that Shinde poured kerosene on Sonawane and set him ablaze.
Kunal (17), who too is accused of setting Sonawane on fire, has been booked for murder, along with 10 others, and has been sent to a juvenile remand home in Nashik.
Initially, it was reported that Shinde first set himself on fire and Sonawane got burnt trying to douse the flames.
Kunal’s statement plays a major role in the case. He told his sister that his father received a call from their employee Rajeev Shirsat, who asked Shinde to meet him at Sagar Dhaba as Sonawane had gone there. “I would go everywhere with papa (Shinde). So, on that day too, I accompanied him. We had kept Rs 50,000 ready to offer Sonawane as bribe.
“Sonawane initiated an argument with papa, which eventually led to an abusive exchange. When papa humiliated Sonawane, he slapped him. Angry, papa kicked Sonawane, who fell on the floor. He again kicked Sonawane—on the chest—and poured kerosene on him. Within a couple of seconds, even before Sonawane could get up, Papa set him on fire. Papa also sustained injures,” Kunal told his family members.
