A CBI spokesperson said that Khan’s name was not removed from the country’s 50 most wanted list until now since the agency had not received such a request from the Mumbai police.
The initial probe into the goof-up put the blame on Mumbai police’s crime branch and Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad for not intimating the CBI about Khan’s arrest.
Khan was caught by the ATS in May last year and charged under the Arms Act for carrying a firearm. The crime branch later took his custody and charged him for the Mulund, Vile Parle and Mumbai Central blasts.
The home ministry has initiated an inquiry to find out how Khan was included in the list of wanted men handed to Pakistan. The probe will also identify the officers behind the lapse. The list was prepared in consultation with the Maharashtra police, the National Investigation Agency and CBI. TNN
