Hindu groups also being grilled

ALL AVENUES OPEN: Investigators are following all possible leads

Mumbai: Investigators probing the serial bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai last week are also calling in suspected members and sympathizers of rightwing Hindu groups for interrogation.

For a few days now, an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team has been collecting information about a rightwing group and questioning two of its associates. But, officials say, the reason behind this line of investigation is mostly political. Until the perpetrators of the 13/7 blasts are finally identified and caught, the government wants to maintain a “balanced approach” and not be seen as targeting any particular community.

“We have not given a clean chit to any group. All options are open. We don’t want to name any outfit in particular. But all those involved in extremist activities are being questioned,” said a senior police officer. “Most of these are people
who appear in our records.”

It is learnt that the National Investigation Agency, which is probing terror cases involving rightwing Hindu groups, has also provided information on these groups to investigators in Maharashtra and asked that checks be conducted on all suspects.
