ATS chief Rakesh Maria submitted his preliminary report about the progress in the case to update the home department,which had to answer some questions on this issue in the assembly.The report contains the names of at least seven suspects, two of whom are believed to be in Pakistan, and four in India, said sources. The seventh name is reportedly that of Yaseen Bhatkal. However, there was no confirmation of Bhatkal’s role in the blast.
“The report mentioned something about speedy progress in the blast case but it did not state who exactly was behind the blast. The report only spoke about some development in the investigation and indicated the prime suspects,’’ an official said. “We are working on several leads and taking help from security agencies in different states,’’ state home minister R R Patil said.
Bhatkal, the ATS suspects, is an active member of the IM. Two more Bhatkals—Riyaz and his brother Iqbal—are still at large. The Bhatkal brothers were suspected to be behind the Ahmedabad, Delhi and several other bomb blasts between 2005 and 2008.
According to sources, Yaseen is Bhatkal’s relative but there was no confirmation on his role in the Pune blast. Yaseen was missing since the Pune blast and the police were searching for him, officials said. TOI had on April 8 written about the two suspects, one of them from Delhi and another from a South-Indian state. Yaseen’s name has cropped up in the Pune blast probe for the first time, said ATS sources.
